Special Award for Excellence for Sedeo seating system from Handicare

AMSTERDAM, 3 November 2010 – Recently the Good Industrial Design Awards 2010 were issued, the hallmark for good industrial design in the Netherlands. To qualify for this hallmark, a product must offer more than just good looks. Functionality, innovation, originality, respect and choice of materials are equally important. In addition, the approved wheelchair seating system ‘Sedeo seating system’ from Handicare, designed by Handicare in cooperation with Scope design & strategy and ACE, distinguished itself for the excellence ‘respect’.

The Good Industrial Design Award – which can be compared with the American Idea Award and the German Red dot and iF-Award – is a popular award for the professionalism of the designer and client. This year, 79 of the more than 100 products entered in five categories have been granted a Good Industrial Design Award. Handicare’s entry in the category ‘consumer goods’ was assessed by an independent expert jury chaired by prof. dr. ir. Wim Poelman.

Award show

The Good Industrial Design Awards were presented during the Award show on 22 October, before the opening of the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. During the same show, six Special Awards for Excellence were awarded to the product entries with the most distinguishing design on the assessment criteria respect, functionality, ergonomics, design, originality and material. A Good Industrial Design Award reinforces the credibility of the product, strengthens its reputation and enhances its success on the market.

The jury’s report

The jury criterion ‘respects’ involves: Respect for nature, respect for society, respect for people, and how the designs make a contribution. It is not always easy for the jury to come to make a choice in this wide field, however, it is a fascinating task as it makes for interesting discussions. It appears that Dutch design agencies and manufacturers are good at developing products and services for disabled people. Two years ago a product supporting the blind was rewarded, last year it was a product for ‘at a distance medication’ and this year again shows an award-winning product in this category.

In fact, there are three winners: manufacturer Handicare, design agency Scope design & strategy and engineering firm ACE. Together they have worked on Handicare’s Sedeo seating system. The jury first of all valued its modularity. The seating system can be adjusted to the end user, is suitable for various carriers, offers many different options and can be easily adjusted to the needs of the end user . The system provides ease of use for all parties involved with the product, from the supplier to the healthcare professional or carer and the user. The second positive aspect distinguishing the product from the competition is its non-stigmatising character. However, above all, the seating system provides a high level of comfort, a quality which was clearly demonstrated by the members of the jury, who enjoyed driving the wheelchair and used the product as a chair during their discussions. Conclusion: The seating system as well as the complete wheelchair is designed in a consistent and attractive way. The image of a power wheelchair as a primarily functional and technical product has, as far as possible, been removed.

Na amper 10 maanden een nieuwe website…

Belangrijkste redenen;
Beeld en informatie op een snellere manier inzichtelijk. Feedback die ik duidelijk heb teruggekregen van mijn vorige site. En dan is er natuurlijk Flash… geen flash in deze site. Dus ook mobiel makkelijk te raadplegen. Tevens is het onderhoud voor mij zellf vergemakkelijkt en dus blijft de site goed actueel.

Met een klein beetje pijn in mijn hart afscheid van de amper 10 maanden oude site… die embody een goede start heeft gegeven, maar nu plaats maakt voor meer eenvoud!

Spark design & innovation is een onafhankelijk en professioneel design & innovatiebureau dat industriële producten bedenkt, ontwerpt en maakt. Het bureau is in 1997 ontstaan uit een fusie van NoorderBreedte ontwerpbureau uit Delft (1992) en Vici Product Development uit ’s-Gravendeel (1994). Spark telt momenteel 23 enthousiaste medewerkers.
